Bridge over Riddle Brook, Van Loan Preserve
Van Loan Preserve:
The Bedford Land Trust hired the Appalachian Mountain Club to construct more than one mile of trails on this property, along with a bridge across Riddle Brook. The AMC was chosen because of their expertise in trail construction. Two eagle scouts also helped with trail construction, trail blazing and construction of the kiosk near the North Amherst Rd. entrance. The trails were opened on May 12, 2007. Click here to view and print a trail map or read about and see photos from the opening event.   Hikers only; take only photos, leave only footprints. Enjoy the trails!
Stewardship:
Our Stewardship Committee is busy monitoring each of the properties on which the Land Trust holds easements. They are gathering baseline documentation for each property, which includes survey data and photos - data to compare with on future visits. The Stewardship Committee Chair, Bob Jones, is currently training volunteer stewards who will take the time to walk a property and check that no one has encroached on the boundaries, dumped trash or otherwise altered the land. Volunteers will be needed to monitor these properties, to visit the property and fill out a report form and send it to the Land Trust. It takes about 3 hours per year to monitor a property. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us.

Benedictine Park

In order to help landowners maintain and protect their properties, the Land Trust holds conservation easements on a number of properties in town. (See our list on our Properties page.) We are working to build trails and make trail maps available on some of the other properties on which we hold easements. We have also been offered and are working on accepting two conservation easements required by NH Department of Environmental Services as mitigation for environmental impacts caused by development projects.
