Please join members of the Bedford Land Trust for a Saturday morning snowshoe/winter hike at the Van Loan Preserve on February 18th from 10:00 AM to noon. A highlight of the walk will be to view the new spur trail, “Gene’s View”, at the southwest wetland. This trail is named in honor of Eugene M. Van Loan III for his longtime public service as both Town and School Moderator and for his efforts to preserve his family’s land with a conservation easement granted to the Bedford Land Trust in 2000. (In 2011, the family donated the 68-acre open space parcel to the Town of Bedford, but the conservation easement held by the Bedford Land Trust runs with the land in perpetuity).
Open to hikers of all ages, the walk will follow an approximately 1.3 mile loop over fairly flat land through beautiful woodlands and over Riddle Brook with views of an old dam and wetlands. The new spur trail starts near the junction of the Anna & Pic Loop and Hemlock Loop and heads southwest approximately 1/10 mile to an open view of the wetland – “Gene’s View.”
From the parking lot at Benedictine Park on Wallace Road, the hike will head west to the Van Loan Preserve. Please meet at the parking lot kiosk at 10:00. Heavy snowfall or downpour cancels the hike. Because of uneven and wet surfaces, hikers should wear appropriate footwear and use caution while crossing the steppingstones under the power lines that run across the land from north to south.
Under the conservation easement held by the Bedford Land Trust, passive recreation such as hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and bird watching is allowed at the Preserve. No wheeled vehicles are permitted.
